I rode the 50 mile WTF yesterday in Nelson County. It’s a great ride. Beautiful scenery. Some big climbs and descents. Light traffic.

My experience was a bit star-crossed yesterday. I hit the deck in the first three miles because I wasn’t paying enough attention to the road and went into a turn way too hot. Luckily, I was able to just ditch it on the grassy shoulder and escaped with some scrapes and road rash but didn’t tear my shorts or anything. It was more embarrassing than anything else.

Later, after the second climb about 30 miles in, I cramped up badly. Had to stop that the top and stretch out for a few minutes. My legs were very tender from that point on and I could feel them twitching under any sort of load.

Lastly, we got caught up in a thunderstorm. It was pretty nasty but short lived and I sought shelter rather than continue in conditions where I knew cars really couldn’t see me. I stopped at a apple cider store where a nice lady gave me a bottle of water and let me hang out on their covered picnic benches as they closed up. There were only five miles left and once another rider stopped with me, we gave it a few minutes and rode the rest in a much lighter rainfall.

Despite the triptych of issues, it was the most fun I’ve had all year. Blue Wheel had a nice stop halfway with refreshments and the people riding were awesome. People helped each other with mechanicals and were very nice. I will do it again.
