I’m searching for a new backup solution. I got rid of my Synology NAS and want to have a cloud based backup. On my main Linux system, I’ve got about 90GB of data in my home directory that are at least somewhat important to me.

The leading contenders are Borg and restic. They both seem good but restic has more flexibility with respect to backends so I’ll try that first.

My first attempt is with restic and iDrive Cloud. They have a 30 day free trial with 2TB of storage which would be more than enough. I found a script that describes how to set up restic with AWS but it’s easy to adapt for other S3 compatible services.

It’s been running an initial backup for a few hours and I’ll write a follow up post once I get a week or two under my belt.
