I haven’t used LXD much recently but it’s a very nice container and virtual machine management system. I’ve done a few things with it in the past and it works really well.

I noticed the other day through some web browsing that Canonical was withdrawing LXD from the Linux Container project and would be developing it in-house. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.

This piece in The Register outlines why that is. One of the principal people behind LXD, Stéphane Graber, has left Canonical and will be working on the project that was forked off of LXD.

Mr. Graber was definitely the prime mover behind LXD so this seems like a negative outcome for LXD and Canonical. It’s hard to tell what went on behind the scenes and I plan to stick with LXD for now but will keep an eye on this new project.
