I took a learn to row class with the Rivanna Rowing Club in July. When we moved to Charlottesville, Kate and I committed to learning some new things and rowing looked interesting.
I’m glad we did it. Based on workouts at the gym, I always thought of rowing as more or less an intense cardio workout that used a lot of muscles. Sort of like cycling on the water. Instead, it is very technique and, in boats with more than one person, team focused. You can’t even get a good workout until you have a basic level of mastery and teamwork.
I’m still a beginner but the light bulb is starting to go on which is a nice feeling of accomplishment. I’m going to continue with the next class and, hopefully, over the next four weeks, I’ll be able to get beyond the very basics and start to hone my technique to be able to get the most out of it.
