I’ve been using Simplenote for about a year. I was looking for an open source cross-platform note taking app that supports Markdown and Simplenote fit the bill.

Simplenote works quite well and I’ve not had any problems with it. However, it fell short on one key requirement: the ability to easily embed images into my notes. I tend to take a lot of screenshots and they are good way to document certain things (especially very GUI intensive apps like SAP) and not having them as an easy option was problematic.

I started looking around for a solution that matched all of these requirements (open source, cross-platform, Markdown support and images) and came across Joplin. I’ve been kicking the tires for the past couple of days and it checks all the boxes and a few more besides.

I’m using Dropbox as the storage repository, but there are other options. I might explore Nextcloud if I start to run out of storage on my free Dropbox account but it should be good enough to get started.

Migrating from Simplenote to Joplin was drop-dead easy: I exported my notes from Simplenote into a zip file, uncompressed it and imported the folder into Joplin.

I’m hoping Joplin just works. I’ll update this if I find any major problems. If not, no news is good news.
